Shillong (Meghalaya), Feb 12 : The District Magistrate of East Jaintia Hills, Manish Kumar, has imposed a ban on bullfights and animal fights across the district, citing violations of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, and the Supreme Court’s 2014 ruling against bullfighting. This move aims to curb animal cruelty, especially during local festivals and fetes.
The order, effective immediately, warns of strict legal action against violators. Authorities will increase monitoring of public gatherings and festivals to ensure compliance. This decision aligns with similar rulings in neighboring states, including Assam’s ban on buffalo and bulbul bird fights.
