Shillong (Meghalaya), Sep 19: The Meghalaya Football Association is all set to make history with the inaugural Meghalaya Women’s State League, which kicks off this Saturday at the SSA Stadium, First Ground, Polo, here. The league will feature 13 top teams from district associations across the state, competing for the coveted title.
Laitkor SC, the champions of the Shillong Sports Association’s Women’s League 2024, will face off against Na Rympei Football Academy, the winners of the Ri-Bhoi District Sports Association’s tournament, in the opening match at 5 pm under floodlights. The Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs, Wailadmiki Shylla, has graciously consented to be present at the match.
The participating teams are divided into three groups. Group A consists of Laitkor SC, Na Rympei FA, Pay For Right Football Academy, Lapalang SSCC, and Attacker’s Youth Club Pahamsyiem. Group B features Mawlum Tyrsad SC, Jakrem SC, Young SSCC, Mawten SC, Bright Future SSCC, and Mawsawrit SC. Group C has two teams, Diengshynrum SC and Chirupheiwi Nongkynrih FC, which will play each other twice, home and away.
This groundbreaking league is a significant milestone for women’s football in Meghalaya, and it will also pave the way for Meghalaya clubs to participate in the Indian Women’s League second division for the first time. The Meghalaya Football Association has modeled the league after the successful Meghalaya State League for men’s clubs, with support from the state government.
