Shillong (Meghalaya), July 24: The Meghalaya government has directed all deputy commissioners to remain vigilant and implement measures to control any potential movement of people into the state from Assam, where a large-scale eviction drive is underway targeting illegal immigrants. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma chaired a high-level meeting to assess the state’s preparedness and bolster border vigilance, particularly in districts bordering Assam.
The state has enhanced surveillance and preventive measures along its interstate border to counter any potential influx of displaced individuals. Village Defence Parties, traditional heads, and NGOs are being coordinated with to ensure timely information sharing and action. The Border Security Force has also intensified patrols along the interstate and international borders, recently apprehending several Bangladeshi nationals for crossing over without valid documents.
Sangma emphasized that vulnerable districts, particularly those bordering eviction-affected areas in Assam, are under special focus. A multi-tiered communication and surveillance system has been set up at the grassroots level to ensure immediate reporting of any suspicious movement. The government has assured that all necessary steps are being taken to maintain peace and security.
The eviction drive in Assam has sparked concerns in Meghalaya about potential spillover effects, given the state’s shared border with Assam. The Meghalaya government has directed all deputy commissioners to maintain strict vigilance and work in tandem with police forces and border security agencies to prevent any unauthorized entry.
The Federation of Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo People has expressed concerns that the eviction drive may lead to an influx of illegal immigrants into Meghalaya and urged the state government to take necessary steps to protect the state’s interests.
