Guwahati (Assam), June 24 : With sudden spike in Covid cases in Guwahati city in the past few days , the government has activated 31 testing centers across the city .
With confirmation coming about community spread in the city a total lockdown for a period of 14 days has been imposed in major areas of the city including Fancy Bazar .
A total of 314 positive cases has been detected in the state in the past 24 hours which is the higest ever spike in the state and includes at least 26 cases from Guwahati and its suburbs .
The government today closed down the Beltola market in the heart of the city indefinitely to check the spread of Covid in the city

The Beltola daily and bi-weekly market in Guwahati, one of the city’s buzziest market , has been closed down by the Kamrup (Metro) administration to discourage large gatherings in the area.
An order issued by the government said , “In view of the large gathering of people, non-maintenance of Covid-19 protocols including non-maintenance of social distancing and also in view of the increasing number of Covid-19 positive cases in Guwahati city, the Beltola daily and bi-weekly market is declared closed with immediate effect”, read a notice issued from the Deputy Commissioner’s office and undersigned by the Additional Deputy Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the District Disaster Management Authority.
State Health Minister , Himanta Biswa Sarma in a tweet said , ” We have activated all 31 Covid Counselling Centres in each and every ward of Guwahati Municipal Corporation. I urge citizen of Guwahati to use these facilities and come forward for voluntary testing for #Covid_19. ”
According to experts , majority of the cases in the capital city do have any travel history .
