Kokrajhar (Assam),Dec 21: A drug smuggler received bullet injuries at a police encounter at Bishmuri area in Kokrajhar district early this morning(December 21).
According to police, the incident occurred at Bishmuri under Kokrajhar police station early this morning around 1 am when the drug smuggler tried to flee from the policy custody who was arrested on Monday along with his associate at Srirampur Simultapu along the Assam-Bengal interstate border check gate.
Police were forced to fire at him when he tried escape from the hands of police and received bullet injuries.
He was identified as Harendar Yadav(28) under Reboti PS, Bolia of Uttar Pradesh.
The injured smugglers was immediately rushed to the Barpeta medical college and reported to be out of danger, though he received bullet injuries on his right leg.
Police also on Monday detected a truck bearing registration no.WB 11C 3219 bound for West Bengal from Guwahati carrying Ganja weighing of 308 Kgs and two persons were apprehended by police .
The police later seized the Ganja and truck.
The market value of the seized Ganja would be around 78 lakhs.
Police also arrested one person who was identified as Mahesh Yadav (60) from Uttar Pradesh.
Meanwhile, a truck bearing Reg NO-WB 11 C 3219 was set on fire but it was doused by the fire & emergency services . The seized Ganja was recovered from the partially burnt truck.
Police said the ganja smugglers torched the truck in the night to escape under the cover of darkness .
“Police has been initiating steps against the crime activities like drugs peddling, Ganja smuggling, cattle smuggling across the district. Till date, police arrested a number of persons and seized drugs and ganjas across the district”, said SP Kokrajhar, Prateek Thube.
