Tura (Meghalaya ), Oct 3 : Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma launched the GREEN Meghalaya Plus scheme, a groundbreaking initiative promoting forest conservation. Education Minister Rakkam A. Sangma joined the launch.
The scheme, part of the Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) initiative, offers incentives up to Rs 20,000 per hectare per year to communities and individuals conserving forest cover. GREEN Meghalaya Plus aims to expand conservation efforts by 50,000 hectares (500 sq km).
Over 3,000 individuals and communities have already benefited from the scheme, conserving 54,000 hectares of natural forest. Chief Minister Sangma praised the collective conservation efforts, thanking beneficiaries from Garo Hills.
“This initiative reinforces our commitment to environmental sustainability,” said CM Sangma.
