Shillong (Meghalaya), April 8: The Meghalaya Cabinet has made a significant decision to provide enhanced benefits to retired Chief Justices and Judges of the Meghalaya High Court, including free petrol, electricity, mobile, and internet services, marking a major boost to their welfare. This move is part of the government’s efforts to show appreciation for the judiciary’s contributions to the state’s development.
The decision was made during a cabinet meeting held today, where the government emphasized its commitment to the welfare of retired judges. The move is expected to bring relief to retired judges, who have dedicated their lives to serving the state’s judiciary.
The Meghalaya Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Conrad Kongkal Sangma, has been actively working to improve the lives of state residents, including retired judges. The decision to provide free essential services is seen as a gesture of goodwill and appreciation for the judiciary’s role in upholding the law.
According to the approved proposal, retired Chief Justices and Judges will be entitled to reimbursement of up to 1000 units of electricity per month, Rs 4,200 per month plus taxes for mobile and internet services, and 100 liters of petrol per month at the Meghalaya rate.
The cabinet has approved an amendment to the Retired Judges’ Secretarial Assistant and Domestic Help Rules 2013 to facilitate these benefits. Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said the decision was taken based on three requests made by the judiciary and the judges themselves.
These benefits will be provided unless the judges are engaged in specific activities or appointed as chairmen of certain commissions, in which case they will receive necessary funds for their activities. The Power Department and the Department of Information Technology will likely oversee the implementation of this decision.
