Shillong (Meghalaya), Jan 31: A devastating incident has shaken the community after a 17-year-old girl student of Class 11 was found dead in her classroom at Jail Road Girls School. The incident has raised serious questions about family turmoil, school negligence, and the lack of support systems for vulnerable students.
According to sources, the student had been facing immense emotional distress due to her complicated family situation. Her father had abandoned her mother when she was just a baby, and she was raised by her grandmother. Her mother had since remarried and had a young child.
On the fateful day, the student had appeared for her first exam but submitted her answer script early, complaining of not feeling well. She did not appear for her second paper, and her body was discovered hanging in the classroom hours later.
The student’s grandmother described her as a bright and talented individual who had excelled academically, achieving first division with distinction in three subjects.
The incident has sparked outrage and demands for accountability from the school authorities. Shockingly, no FIR has been filed so far in this case, despite the police registering a case.
Investigations have revealed that the school gates were left open, and CCTV footage showed that the student did not leave the school premises. This raises disturbing questions about the school’s responsibility to ensure the student’s safety and well-being.
The principal of Jail Road Girls School, C. Challam, stated that the moment they came to know about the incident, they immediately informed the police and ruled out any foul play. “We are cooperating fully with the investigation and are deeply saddened by the loss of our student,” Challam added.
Neighbours and family members described the student as a well-behaved child, but it is clear that she was struggling emotionally. Her desire to see her mother remarried, combined with the pain of being separated from her mother after her father’s desertion, may have taken a devastating toll on her mental health.
A post-mortem has been conducted, and the reports are awaited. However, a note found near her body, written in her own handwriting, simply stated, “I’m sorry.” Family members confirmed the handwriting, leaving many questions unanswered.
The question that remains is: why did she have to end her life in her classroom? Was there any other incident or some relationship in the school that could have compelled her to end her life? The investigation must provide answers and hold those responsible accountable.
Jail Road Girls School, which has produced many stalwarts, is now under scrutiny for its role in this tragedy. As the community mourns the loss of this bright and talented student, it is essential to recognize the need for greater support systems for vulnerable students and to demand accountability from institutions responsible for their care.
