Shillong, Sep 15: Ri-Bhoi are still ruling the roost after a high-voltage second day at the Meghalaya State Senior Athletics Championship 2026 here today.
The district powerhouse has surged to 8 gold, 3 silver and 6 bronze medals, holding firm at the top of the table. East Khasi Hills stormed into second place with 4 gold, 4 silver and 1 bronze, pushing Eastern West Khasi Hills to third with 3 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze.
The three-day championship, organised by the Meghalaya Athletics Association with support from the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, is underway at the SAI Centre, NEHU campus, Shillong.
East Khasi Hills dominated the track, clinching both the men’s and women’s 4x400m relays, while Daniel L Wahlang sealed gold in the men’s 5000m and the brilliant Balasiewdor Pathaw left her rivals more than a minute and a half behind to win the women’s 5000m.
Ri-Bhoi added two more golds through Anrisha Klein in women’s long jump and Banistar Syiem in men’s shot put, while West Jaintia Hills swept both the men’s and women’s 4x100m relays with East Khasi Hills finishing second in both.
It was a day to remember for Garo Hills as well. Tushal M Sangma brought glory to North Garo Hills with gold in men’s javelin, Dilme Ch Marak of South Garo Hills won the women’s discus, Nokme Ch Sangma also from South Garo Hills took the women’s javelin, and Eliam Bonkam G Sangma gave South West Garo Hills their first gold in men’s long jump.
In the 400m sprints, Lastly Surong of East Jaintia Hills won the men’s race while Tengsilchi B Marak took the women’s title.
With every district now on the medal board, the stage is set for a fierce final day as athletes chase not just district pride but also a spot in contention for the 39th National Games just months away.
