Shillong (Meghalaya), Feb 2: The Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee has slammed the BJP-led Union Government’s decision to scrap the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), marking twenty years since its inception. The party claims the new VB-GRAMG scheme is a discretionary replacement that abandons the state’s responsibility to provide work, leaving rural Indians vulnerable.
According to Congress, MGNREGA was more than just a policy – it was a lifeline for rural families, providing wages during hard times, reducing migration, and keeping children in school. “The BJP’s decision is not reform, it’s abandonment,” said Lang Kupar War, Chairman, Social Media Department, Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee.
The Congress is demanding the immediate restoration of a universal, demand-driven, and legally enforceable right to work, citing the loss of dignity and livelihood for millions. The party stands in solidarity with rural workers, women, Adivasis, Dalits, and persons with disabilities who depended on MGNREGA.
