Shillong (Merghalaya), Feb 4: In a significant step towards tackling the rising cancer burden, the State Cancer Society of Meghalaya launched several initiatives, including a statewide HPV testing program and a dedicated Cancer Screening App, at the 2nd Meghalaya Cancer Conclave. The event, held on World Cancer Day, brought together doctors, health officials, and policymakers to address the growing concern.
Health Minister Wailadmiki Shylla emphasized the need for early detection, citing India’s 1.56 million annual cancer cases and Meghalaya’s high incidence rate, particularly in East Khasi Hills district. The government is providing free cancer treatment, including chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgery, and palliative care, at Civil Hospitals in Shillong and Tura.
The Cancer Screening App and HPV testing initiative aim to strengthen early detection, improve data-driven interventions, and expand cancer care access beyond urban centers. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma highlighted the government’s focus on early detection, allocating nearly 9% of the state budget to healthcare.
