Imphal(Manipur) , Aug 16 : The All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) on Sunday demanded a high level inquiry into the antecedents of all the police personnel who were conferred gallantry awards this year and to strip the award if any of them were found involved in heinous crimes like drug trafficking.
A press release of AMSU signed by its Publicity and Information Secretary Lhunpao Lupheng stated that the AMSU is outraged to see Bheishamayum Debson Singh, SI CDO, Imphal East, who was arrested for trafficking drugs worth more than Rs 3 crore in 2013 is awarded Chief Minister’s Police Medal for Gallantry for 2020.
It may be recalled that on 28 April 2013 Sub-Inspector Beishamayum Debson Singh of Singjamei Bheigyabati Leikai, Imphal East was arrested along with an 11-member team of the Manipur Police commando at Pallel on the way to Moreh carrying Respifed tablets and Pseudoephedrine tablets worth Rs. 3,64,02,000 in international market.
An FIR number 62(4)2013 Kakching police station under Section 21/29 of the ND&PS Act and 27 Arms Act was lodged , AMSU said in the press release.
The same person Bheishamayum Debson Singh was listed in serial number 6 of the Chief Minister’s Police Medal for Gallantry notified vide reference number 27/6/2020-H {CM-MEDAL) dated 12th August 2020, the AMSU pointed out.
He further stated that the AMSU cannot understand how the Chief Minister who eloquently elaborated on the issue of “War Against Drugs” during his official address on the Independence Day ceremony could confer a gallantry award to such police personnel caught red handed on charges of drug trafficking.
The AMSU hoped and prayed that the much flaunted “War Against Drugs” is not turned into “War for Drugs”, the Information and Publicity Secretary said.
