Imphal (Manipur), Feb 3: In a move that’s being seen as a significant shift towards restoring peace and normalcy in Manipur, Yumnam Khemchand Singh, a veteran Taekwondo player and BJP MLA from Singjamei constituency, is set to become the state’s next Chief Minister. His election as the legislature party leader was celebrated by hundreds of supporters, who took to the streets, bursting firecrackers and dancing in joy.
Khemchand’s clean image and track record of development in his constituency have earned him widespread acclaim. “He believes in action, not words,” said Thongam Shanti Devi, a supporter, echoing the sentiment of many. BJP Manipur spokesperson Laimayum Bashanta Sharma believes Khemchand’s selection reflects the centre’s intention to restore peace and harmony in the state, citing his acceptability across communities, including Nagas and Kukis.
A former Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly and Cabinet Minister, Khemchand has held key portfolios like Municipal Administration, Housing Development, Rural Development, and Education. His visit to Kuki relief camps in Ukhrul and Kamjong districts last December, where he interacted with displaced persons, has been seen as a significant gesture of outreach and reconciliation.
As Manipur looks towards a new chapter, Khemchand’s leadership is expected to bring a renewed focus on development and harmony.
