Williamnagar(Meghalaya), May 05: The East Garo Hills district administration has issued a public advisory making registration of all migrant workers mandatory under the Meghalaya Identification and Registration (Safety & Security) Act, 2020, warning that employers and workers failing to comply will face steep penalties.
Deputy Commissioner, East Garo Hills, said the measure is meant to ensure safety, maintain public order, and protect the rights of both workers and residents. A migrant worker is defined as any person not belonging to or domiciled in Meghalaya who is employed in any establishment in the state. All such workers must register and obtain a valid registration card, with employers responsible for ensuring compliance.
Registration can be done online through the portal http://www.investmeghalaya.gov.in by submitting documents such as Aadhaar, Voter ID or PAN card along with a photograph. Offline registration is also available at the office of the Labour Department or the Deputy Labour Commissioner, East Garo Hills.
The advisory warned that failure to comply will attract penalties. Employers who do not register workers may be fined between Rs 5,000 and Rs 1,00,000, and repeated violations may lead to imprisonment. Unregistered workers are also liable to be fined. It added that any harassment or discrimination against migrant workers is punishable under law. All concerned have been asked to comply strictly for safety and legality.
