Shillong ( Meghalaya), Feb 7 : A devastating explosion at an illegal coal mine in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills district has claimed 27 lives, with rescue teams working tirelessly to locate missing workers. The incident occurred on February 5, 2026, at the Mynsyngat-Thangsko area, prompting authorities to launch a large-scale search and rescue operation involving multiple agencies.
Two mine owners, Forme Chyrmang and Shamehi War, have been arrested in connection with the incident. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has assured strict action against those responsible, stating that the government has zero tolerance for illegal coal mining. Over 1,000 cases have been registered, and hundreds have been charge-sheeted in recent years.
The mine was using the banned rat-hole mining method, which involves digging narrow tunnels and is highly hazardous. The National Green Tribunal imposed a ban on this practice in 2014 due to environmental damage and risks to human life.
