Imphal, Sep 26: Unidentified militants shot dead two Naga villagers in their sleep and left two injured in Manipur’s Senapati district early Saturday, two days after four Tangkhul Naga men were gunned down near the Myanmar border in Kamjong.
Police said the attack took place at Kalajan village. The dead have been identified as Rocky Mao of Chaowainamai and Kumar Poumai of Laii Shirafii. The injured, Adani Manio, 33, and Ashiho Sani, 49, were rushed to a private hospital in Senapati. Bodies have been taken to Senapati District Hospital for postmortem.
Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh condemned the cowardly act against innocents. Former CM N Biren Singh said the cycle continues unchecked with over 60 deaths since early this year, noting armed militants entered their home and shot them while asleep.
The Senapati killings follow Friday’s recovery of four Tangkhul Naga bodies — Betterson Jajo, Vareishim Jajo, his son Phami Jajo and Ningthem Kashak — from Pilong village in Kamjong, 34 km from the district headquarters. Police said the five villagers were ambushed on Sep 24 by suspected militants who crossed from Myanmar, with one escaping to alert authorities.
At least 13 people have been killed in militant attacks across Tamenglong, Kangpokpi, Noney and Kamjong in September alone.
