Kokrajhar ( Assam),Feb 8: Members of Kokrajhar Press Club today staged a protest in front of Kokrajhar Press Club office premises here against attack on journalist Jayanta Debnath at Basugaon.
The sit- in protest was organised by Kokrajhar Press Club in association with Bodoland Journalists Association to pressurize the administration to take steps against the two police personnel for carrying out physical attack on journalist Jayanta Debnath while he was discharging his professional duties ,
Members from different media house participated the sit – in protest and demanded immediate arrest and punishment of the two police personnel who were involved in the incident .
A memorandum was submitted to the chief minister of Assam, Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma through Deputy Commissioner, Kokrajhar Varnali Deka seeking immediate action against the police personnel who attacked on journalist Jayanta Debnath on Monday at Basugaon of Chirang district.
The Kokrajhar Press Club also demanded a strict action on the police personnel involved in the attack of journalist Jayanta Debnath at Basugaon on Feb 7 and to stop all forms of atrocities on media persons.
” The media persons of Kokrajhar today were compelled to protest against manhandling of a journalist police personnel “,the memorandum stated .
Kokrajhar Press Club also demanded an immediate inquiry and arrest of police personnel involved in attack on journalist Jayanta Debnath and demanded stringent punishment to the culprits and ensure safety and security by easing atrocities on media persons.
Bodoland Journalists Association (BJA) expressed it’s serious concerned over the attack on journalist Jayanta Debnath who is till date under treatment at a private hospital in Bongaigaon.
President of the association, Abu Bakkar Siddique and general secretary Hantigiri Narzary said that the attack on the journalist was unfortunate and unwanted .
The association leaders demanded a high level investigation into the incident and immediate arrests of the two police personnel’s who were involved in the attack.
The All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) has strongly condemned the attack on Jayanta Debnath at Basugaon of Chirang district on Monday and demanded a strict investigation into the incident.
ABSU president Dipen Boro while expressing serious concern over the attack on journalist Jayanta Debnath by two police personnel which led to hospitalization of the journalist.
He has demanded a high level enquiry into the incident and appealed to the chief minister of Assam Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma for intervention and disciplinary action against the police constables.
General Secretary of All BTC Minority Students Union (ABMSU) Taison Hussain also strongly condemned the atrocity on a media persons at Basugaon of Chirang district.
Hussain urged the government and police to take a strong step against the two police personnel who attacked journalist Jayanta Debnath.
Meanwhile, Special DGP and in-charge IGP of Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), Dr L R Bishnoi said that an investigation has already started.
He said that the police administration is shocked with the attack on a journalist on Monday and necessary action would be taken . He said that the incident was unfortunate for the police administration and involved police personnel would be punished.
He informed that the two police personnel have been fined Rs. 1000 each for violating the traffic rules for not wearing helmets while driving two wheelers.
