Guwahati (Assam) , April 6: Gilbertson Sangma, the renowned Assam footballer known as the “Man with the Golden Boot,” was laid to rest on Sunday, April 5, 2026. Sangma, who passed away on April 4, 2026, at 71, was a stalwart of Assam football, representing the state and Assam Police in numerous tournaments.
Sangma’s illustrious career spanned over 17 years, during which he played for Assam Police and the state team, winning several titles, including the Bordoloi Trophy and Independence Day Cup. He was also part of the Indian team for three international friendlies in Indonesia and Thailand in 1975.
Tributes poured in from across the sports fraternity, with Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma paying homage to the legend. NorthEast United FC, the Assam Sepak Takraw Association, and other sports organizations also condoled his passing.
Sangma’s legacy extends beyond his playing days, inspiring generations of footballers in Assam and beyond. His contributions to Indian football have left an indelible mark, and he will be deeply missed.
