Guwahati (Assam), March 19: In a shocking turn of events, Prateek Bordoloi, the Congress candidate from Margherita, has withdrawn his nomination from the upcoming Assam Assembly elections. This decision comes just a day after his father, Pradyut Bordoloi, a Congress MP from Nagaon, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
In a letter to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Prateek cited the “present circumstances” and his father’s decision to join another party as the reason for his withdrawal. “I feel it would not be appropriate for me to continue as a candidate,” he wrote, adding that it would be unfair to the people of Margherita and dedicated Congress workers if any confusion arose regarding his commitment or the party’s position.
Prateek’s decision is seen as a significant blow to the Congress party, which had fielded him as a candidate in the Margherita constituency. The move is likely to raise questions about the party’s strategy and its ability to retain its strongholds in Assam.
Despite withdrawing from the election, Prateek assured his faith in the Congress party remains unwavering. “I will continue to work for the party and for the development of Margherita in whatever capacity the leadership deems appropriate,” he said.
The development has sent shockwaves in Assam politics, with many speculating about the impact of Pradyut Bordoloi’s switch to BJP on the Congress party’s prospects in the state. The BJP, meanwhile, is likely to see this as a major gain, having picked up a key player from the opposition.
