Shillong(Meghalaya), April 22 : The Voice of Peoples Party (VPP) has expelled 3 senior leaders just after the conclusion of the parliamentary elections in the state for allegedly making statements online and offline that go against the party’s policy.
The members include, state executive members, Avner Pariat and Shanlang Warjri and a senior member Kherup Sing Thabah. All the three members were issued separate expulsion notices.
In a letter addressed to Avner Pariat on Saturday, VPP disciplinary committee chairman, Kara H Chen, said the party has taken serious note of his recent statements against the VPP and in favour of another political party on social media platform, which is “unbecoming of an SEC member.” The letter further stated that Pariat’s actions have undermined their efforts to strengthen the party. “This act of indiscipline on your part has left us with no option but to expel you from the party with immediate effect,” Chen said.
But Pariat said that he had already shown his intention to resign after the elections, citing concerns over divisive politics and the party’s focus on religious rhetoric rather than substantive issues.
He said despite his repeated attempts to engage party leadership, he received no response, leading him to believe that leaving was the best course of action.
In a “letter of resignation”, Pariat said he has become “increasingly disillusioned by the direction the party has taken”.
On Monday, In a letter addressed to another expelled executive member, Shanlang Warjri, the VPP stated, “The party has taken serious note of your statements made through social media platforms, which are unbecoming for a member of the State Executive Committee.”
Similarly, in an expulsion letter, to Kherup Sing Thabah, the VPP wrote, “The party has taken serious note of your statements, actions, and behavior, which are unbecoming for a member of the party.”
“After thorough consideration and review of your actions, statements, and behavior, it has become evident that your conduct is inconsistent with the values and principles of our party. Your behavior and actions have brought disrepute to the party and undermined our collective efforts to uphold integrity and promote our agenda…. This act of indiscipline on your part has left us with no option but to expel you from the party with immediate effect,” the VPP expulsion letter to Thabah said .
