Shillong (Meghalaya), Aug 7: The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), here came alive with the vibrant colors and rich textures of Northeast India’s handloom heritage as it celebrated National Handloom Day. The event was a kaleidoscope of culture, fashion, and tradition, featuring a Saree Draping Workshop, an ethnic fashion show, and a spirited Bihu dance performance.
Dr. Pooja Pandey, IAS, Director of Census Operations for Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya, attended the occasion as Chief Guest, highlighting the significance of the handloom sector as the second-largest employment generator in the country after agriculture. She emphasized the importance of preserving cultural heritage and empowering women through traditional crafts.
The fashion show was a stunning display of contemporary ensembles crafted from traditional handwoven fabrics, blending modern design sensibilities with timeless heritage. The Saree Draping Workshop showcased the diversity and identity of Indian textiles, while the Bihu dance performance brought the vibrant cultural rhythm of Assam to life.
The celebration is part of NIFT Shillong’s Handloom Week, a week-long extravaganza featuring live demonstrations, exhibitions, panel discussions, and student-led initiatives to showcase and innovate with India’s handloom legacy.
