Shillong (Meghalaya), Jan 30: Meghalaya is abuzz with the international conference on Scaling Nature-based Solutions (NbS) for Himalayan Resilience, happening today and tomorrow here. Organized by the Meghalaya Basin Development Authority (MBDA) and the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), the event brings together policymakers, researchers, and community leaders to discuss integrating NbS into development planning for climate resilience and ecosystem restoration.
Chief Secretary Dr. Shakil P. Ahammed highlighted Meghalaya’s efforts in operationalizing NbS through initiatives like afforestation, springshed revival, and Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES). The state’s 76% forest cover, with 90% managed by local communities, is a testament to its commitment to nature.
The conference focuses on scaling NbS approaches, such as spring shed management and agroforestry, to address climate change, biodiversity loss, and livelihood security. With the Indian Himalayan Region being one of the most climate-vulnerable landscapes, the event aims to strengthen regional collaboration and generate actionable pathways for Meghalaya and the Himalayan region.
