Shillong(Meghalaya), Aug 12 : The city has taken a significant step towards sustainable urban mobility with the launch of Ride Shillong, a public electric bicycle sharing system. The initiative, launched by CM Conrad K. Sangma, aims to promote eco-friendly transportation, reduce traffic congestion, and encourage healthier lifestyles.
The system has been rolled out with over 20 electric bicycles across key points in the city, available for public use through an app-based system. The project is a collaborative effort between the State Urban Affairs Department, GIZ India, and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
Fitness icon Milind Soman, who was present at the launch event, praised the initiative, calling it a model for other cities to promote sustainability and fitness. Chief Minister Sangma emphasized the project’s commitment to benefiting the city, its citizens, and tourists, while promoting a greener and healthier Meghalaya.
The government plans to develop a Non-Motorized Transport policy, which includes measures like a parking policy to reduce roadside parking and free up space for pedestrians. The project aims to make Shillong a “walking and cycling city,” with a target of achieving 35% non-motorized transport in the city.
