Tura (Meghalaya), Nov 23: In a significant victory for the National People’s Party (NPP), Dr. Mehtab Chandee Sangma has won the Gambegre by poll, defeating her nearest rival, TMC’s Sadhiarani, by a comfortable margin. The by poll, which saw an impressive 90% voter turnout, was held after the resignation of Congress MLA Saleng A Sangma, who recently won the Tura parliamentary seat.
Dr. Chandee, the wife of Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, campaigned extensively in the constituency, connecting with voters and highlighting the NPP’s development agenda. Her victory is seen as a major boost to the NPP’s fortunes in the state.
The Gambegre by poll was widely seen as a high-profile contest, with the NPP and TMC engaging in a fierce battle for supremacy. However, in the end, Dr. Chandee’s popularity and the NPP’s organizational strength proved too much for the TMC to handle.
With this victory, the NPP has reinforced its position as a dominant force in Meghalaya politics. Dr. Chandee’s win is also expected to have a positive impact on the party’s prospects in future elections.
