New Delhi, Nov 4: In a significant development, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Manikya, and former BJP spokesperson Mmhonlumo Kikon announced the formation of a new political entity for the Northeast region. The announcement was made during a joint press conference in New Delhi.
The new entity aims to provide a unified platform for the people of the Northeast, focusing on critical regional issues such as illegal infiltration, border security, and equitable development. A nine-member committee has been formed to deliberate on the future course of action, including the modalities and structure of the proposed entity. The committee, led by former Meghalaya minister James Sangma, will submit its report within 45 days.
“Today, young leaders from across our region have come together with one shared vision, to unite our voices and form a single political platform that truly represents the aspirations of our people,” the leaders said. “Inspired by the legacy of our great leaders, we are taking the first step toward building a strong, collective voice for the North East. A committee will be formed to chart the way forward. Together, we stand for a stronger, more united North East!”
According to Sangma, the initiative seeks to bring together diverse voices from the Northeast under one banner, emphasizing that protecting the land rights of indigenous communities would remain central to their agenda. Pradyot Manikya emphasized that the effort is one of unity and purpose rather than confrontation, stating, “We are not here to pick up fights with anyone but fight for our rights.”
The new entity has been formed with the objective of amplifying the region’s voice in national politics. The leaders believe that national parties have historically overlooked the unique socio-political realities of the Northeast, and the new party will serve as a collective platform to unify regional aspirations and speak with one voice in Delhi.
