Shillong(Meghalaya), Jan 28 : Cabinet Minister Sanbor Shullai has raised serious concerns over the steep increase in land rent within Shillong Cantonment Area, questioning the violation of right to equality compared to adjacent municipal areas. Shullai asserts that there cannot be two different tax structures for cantonment and municipal areas.

Shullai led a BJP delegation to New Delhi, meeting Union Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth and Director General of Defence Estate Shoba Gupta, requesting the ministry to amend the interim policy and implement 25% of the calculated Standard Rent (STR) for existing lessees. The exorbitant rent hike has led to pending cases in the Supreme Court and various high courts.
