Shillong (Meghalaya), Feb 25: The Meghalaya Legislative Assembly is witnessing a heated debate over the state’s reservation policy, with the Voice of the People Party (VPP) demanding a review of the existing 40:40 quota between Khasi-Jaintias and Garos. VPP president Ardent Basaiawmoit argues that the current policy doesn’t reflect demographic realities, suggesting a 47% reservation for Khasi-Jaintias .
The expert committee, headed by Justice Mool Chand Garg, has recommended maintaining the 1972 Reservation Policy, citing majority stakeholder support and potential judicial review if changed. However, Basaiawmoit criticizes the eight-month delay in the government’s response, calling it “suspicious”.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has expressed openness to discussions, while Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma urges caution, emphasizing unity and brotherhood among tribal communities.
The debate highlights deeper concerns about equitable representation, socio-economic backwardness, and historical injustices.
