Shillong (Meghalaya), Feb 26: The State has reported the highest number of HIV/AIDS cases in India, with over 10,293 people receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) as of January 2026. The state has recorded 749 HIV/AIDS-related deaths in the past decade, with East Khasi Hills accounting for 435 fatalities, followed by West Jaintia Hills (123) and East Jaintia Hills (90).
Health Minister Wailadmiki Shylla attributed the deaths to opportunistic infections, clarifying that none were directly caused by HIV/AIDS. The government has sanctioned ₹25 crore for a five-year mission-mode programme to curb the rise in cases, focusing on expanding testing facilities, manpower, and outreach services.
Key Statistics:
HIV Prevalence: 0.43%, double the national average
Transmission Modes: 52% through casual heterosexual sex, 28% through regular partners or spouses
Affected Population: 500 children, mostly from low-income families
The state government is working hard to address stigma and improve testing and treatment access.
