Tura( Meghalaya), April 8 : A retired High Court judge, B.R. Kataky, has launched a sweeping probe into illegal coal mining in Meghalaya’s West Khasi Hills and Garo Hills, vowing to take strong measures against unlawful activities. Kataky’s visit included on-ground investigations in Hatiabari and Sarangma, where he reviewed coal loading operations and inspected the Smart Coal Gate.
A high-level meeting with senior officials emphasized coordinated efforts to curb illegal mining, with Deputy Commissioners and Superintendents of Police from multiple districts attending. Kataky’s probe aims to strengthen monitoring mechanisms and enforce strict action against coal-related crimes.
The move is seen as a major crackdown on rampant illegal mining in the region, which has raised concerns over environmental and safety issues.
