Shillong (Meghalaya), Sep 12: In a unanimous decision, Limison D Sangma, a seasoned legislator from the National People’s Party, was elected unopposed as the Deputy Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. The announcement was made by Speaker Thomas A Sangma on the concluding day of the Autumn Session, following the resignation of Timothy D Shira.
Expressing gratitude, Sangma thanked both the ruling and opposition parties for their confidence in him. “I believe the opposition did not put up a candidate because they trust me. I am very grateful to my party colleagues as well as the opposition for unanimously electing me to this post,” he said.
Sangma emphasized the importance of impartiality in his new role, pledging to conduct Assembly proceedings with fairness. “Being elected to this post, I will have to always remain neutral. Whether members are from the ruling party or the opposition, I must do justice to both sides and ensure fairness in the House,” he stated.
The newly elected Deputy Speaker also highlighted his commitment to strengthening the effectiveness of the Assembly and ensuring productive deliberations. He plans to introduce new ideas and technologies to enhance democratic practices and public engagement, working closely with Speaker Thomas A Sangma.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma lauded Limison’s election, praising his humility, gentleness, and fairness. “He is known for honesty, humility, and generosity,” the Chief Minister said.
