Shillong (Meghalaya) , March 18: The 1st Shillong International Film Festival is set to dazzle audiences from March 25 to 27 at the State Convention Centre. Organized by the Directorate of Information and Public Relations, this three-day extravaganza aims to establish Meghalaya as a hub for global cinema and boost the state’s creative economy.
The festival will showcase 16 regional films, including “Ha Lyngkha Bneng” (Meghalaya), “Our Home (Eikhoigi Yum)” (Manipur), and “Kok Kok Kokoook” (Assam), alongside international works like “Impermanent Residents” (Vietnam) and “Agent of Happiness” (Bhutan).
Information and Public Relations Minister Lahkmen Rymbui emphasized the festival’s potential to open new avenues for filmmakers and promote Meghalaya’s scenic appeal. The event will feature masterclasses by Dominic Sangma (screenplay writing) and Arnab Gayan (cinematography), as well as a “Film Shooting Promotion” initiative to boost tourism and local employment.
The festival also includes a Student Short Film Competition, inviting young filmmakers to explore themes of identity, culture, and human experiences under the theme “Beyond Borders”. Selected entries will be showcased during the festival, providing emerging talent with valuable exposure.
