Shillong (Meghalaya), Oct 14: The Garo Hills Press & Media Association has strongly condemned the interference of the Executive and Administrative organs of South Garo Hills, Meghalaya, in the independent functioning of media outlets. This move is seen as a threat to the fourth pillar of democracy, which relies on a free press to hold those in power accountable.
In a statement, Association President Sanggra M. Marak and General Secretary Dalseng A. Sangma emphasized that press freedom is essential for a healthy democracy. They stated that the media’s role is to raise awareness about social issues, irregularities, and scams, and that any obstruction or intimidation by government authorities is unacceptable.
Key Concerns:
Interference in Independent Reporting: Government interference undermines the media’s ability to report truthfully and hold those in power accountable.
Threats to Media Houses and Journalists: Intimidation tactics used by administrative and executive organs to silence fair and transparent reporting.
Undermining Democracy: Obstruction of press freedom compromises the very foundation of democracy.
The Association has called for immediate action to address these concerns and ensure that press freedom is protected in Meghalaya. As a watchdog of democracy, the media plays a vital role in shaping public discourse and promoting transparency
