Shillong ( Meghalaya ), Feb 1 : The employees of Garo Hills Autonomous District Council received the support of the officers and NGOs today as they began their two-day pen down strike.
The functioning of the GHADC came to a grinding halt today , as most of rooms of the office of the were found empty.
The employees are agitating against the election of the new Chief Executive Member of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council, Rakesh Sangma.
They said, “Rakesh Sangma is not a Garo MDC, so how can he protect the identity of the Garo community”. The employees of GHADC have the support of Garo Students’ Union, Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People, ADE, AYWO, FAF, GGU, Tura Senior Citizens Forum, New Tura Development Forum, Non Gazetted Employees Association (NGEA) and North East Students’ Organization for the removal of the incumbent CEM.
Meanwhile, the NGEA leaders of GHADC who have been suspended by the previous Executive Committee under the former Chief Executive Member Benedic R.Marak are not taking part in the pen down strike. However, they are giving their moral support, said Senora Jhony Marak, former President of NGEA of GHADC.
