Gambegre( Meghalaya), Nov 13: Today, the high-profile by-election for the Gambegre seat in Meghalaya’s Garo Hills is underway.
The seat was vacated by Saleng Sangma, who contested the 2024 Lok Sabha election and is currently the Lok Sabha MP.
This election has garnered significant attention due to the strong candidatures of Mehtab Chandee Sangma, a medical doctor, and Sadhiarani Sangma, a postgraduate degree holder.
Key Candidates:
Mehtab Chandee Sangma : Wife of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and a medical doctor
Sadhiarani Sangma : Wife of Zenith Sangma, former legislator, and sister-in-law of former CM Dr. Mukul Sangma
Four other male candidates are also in the fray, but all eyes are on the two leading women contenders
Meghalaya has only 3 women MLAs out of a legislature of 60 MLAs, making this election crucial for women’s representation. The outcome will be closely watched, especially considering the strong female candidates.
The Gambegre assembly constituency is in the West Garo Hills district, with 26,026 voters, and a significant Christian population (95.91%).
