Kheliehriat (Meghalaya), Dec 14: The East Jaintia Hills district administration has taken decisive action against environmental polluters, demolishing unauthorized coke plants operating in the area. Following directions from the Meghalaya High Court, a joint team comprising officials from the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board and the Police Department carried out the demolition drive.
A total of 16 coke plants were identified as unauthorized, with 5 previously demolished. The remaining 11 plants were issued notices in October 2025, but no responses were received. On December 13, 2025, the joint team successfully demolished 7 out of the 11 unauthorized coke plants, while the remaining 4 were found to have already been dismantled by their owners.
Deputy Commissioner Shivansh Awasthi confirmed that all 11 unauthorized coke plants are now non-operational. The demolition drive aims to enforce environmental norms and ensure adherence to institutional regulations, marking a significant step towards protecting the environment and promoting sustainable development in the region.
