Shillong (Meghalaya), April 5 : A city -based dentist prescribed whiskey to one of his patients who had complained of withdrawal symptoms. This the dentist had done in the wake of a nationwide lockdown to curb the spread of the Covid -19 .
The prescription by the doctor has gone viral on social media.
According to the prescription , Dr B Purkayastha had prescribed “two bottles of whiskey” to a 65-year-old patient on April 3 and had prescribed the patient not to drink more than three pegs (whiskey) in a day.
The news came after the East Khasi Hills Wine Dealers and Welfare Association urged Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to grant permission to open the liquor shops in the state. The association had sent a letter to the Meghalaya chief minister seeking permission to open liquor shops in the state.
Earlier the Excise Department vide notice no. ERTS (E) 47/2017/46, issued by B Syiemlieh, deputy secretary of Excise Department, had clearly mentioned that alcohol will be made available only on medical grounds.
The notification clearly stated that alcohol delivery would require a prescription by a ‘registered medical practitioner’.
