Shillong (Meghalaya), Oct 16: Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma, chaired a crucial meeting with community leaders, faith-based organizations, and educationists to discuss strategies to prevent crimes against women and children. The meeting emphasized the need for a collaborative approach between the government and society to ensure a safe environment for women and children.
The Chief Minister stressed that crimes against women and children are serious human rights violations and require a multi-pronged approach to prevent them. Participants suggested enhancing surveillance systems, improving streetlights, and implementing strong legal frameworks to improve safety. Other key discussion points included education on gender equality, sex education, sensitization, and awareness programs.
The meeting also highlighted the need for counselors and counseling services, stronger measures against drug abuse and trafficking, and addressing social issues like school dropouts, teenage pregnancies, and unemployment. The Chief Minister appealed for responsible use of social media to reduce crimes and assured that the government is committed to taking steps to prevent such incidents with the collaborative efforts of society and stakeholders.
