Shillong (Meghalaya), Dec 2: The District Early Intervention Centre (DEIC) at Ganesh Das Govt M&CH Hospital, in collaboration with the State RBSK Programme, National Health Mission (NHM), Meghalaya, observed World Disability Day with a focus on fostering a disability-inclusive society. The event, held at DHS, Medical Education & Research (DME), Pasture Hills, here, brought together experts, officials, and community members to discuss ways to create a more accessible and supportive environment for persons with disabilities.
Dr. E. Shadap, Medical Superintendent (Jt. DHS), emphasized the importance of inclusion, stating that it’s not just a right, but a responsibility. “When we remove barriers in education, healthcare, employment, public spaces, and communication, we unlock human potential that benefits all of society,” she said.
The event featured sessions on various schemes and initiatives for persons with disabilities, including skill development, rehabilitation, and empowerment programs. The Composite Regional Centre (CRC) Shillong announced the launch of India’s first Diploma in Sign Language Interpretation, a pioneering step towards promoting inclusive education and employment opportunities.
The celebration culminated in a gift distribution ceremony, bringing joy to children with special needs and reaffirming Meghalaya’s commitment to creating a more inclusive society. With the theme “Fostering a Disability-Inclusive Society for Advancing Social Progress,” the event highlighted the importance of working together to build a society that values and empowers every individual.
