Imphal (Manipur), Sep 13: A group of 10 legislators from Manipur, including seven from the BJP, submitted a joint memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Churachandpur, urging the creation of a separate Union Territory with a legislature. The MLAs cited “ethnic persecution” and alleged state complicity in violence that forced the minority Kuki-Zo community out of valley areas.
“We can now live in peace only as good neighbors, never under the same roof again,” the memorandum stated, asserting that separation is essential for lasting peace, justice, and security. The signatories expressed hope that Modi’s visit would mark a “historic shift” in Manipur’s political future and urged him to expedite dialogue on their demand.
The legislators emphasized that a separate Union Territory would provide the necessary security, justice, and belonging to their people. They also highlighted the need for interim planning mechanisms and budgetary arrangements to fund development projects in districts predominantly inhabited by the Kuki-Zo community.
The demand comes amid ongoing ethnic conflict in Manipur, which has resulted in over 260 deaths and displaced tens of thousands of people since May 2023. Prime Minister Modi, during his address in Churachandpur, stressed peace, reconciliation, and development, announcing special packages and resettlement plans for displaced families.
