Tura (Meghalaya) , Mar 12 : On Wednesday night around 8.30 pm , the Deputy Commander -in -chief of the banned United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA -I) managed to give police a slip and escaped along with some of his members after a bief encounter with the state police .
According to sources , suspected ULFA (I) members opened indiscriminate fire at a police team at Bolbokgre village in South Garo Hills. The police also retaliated immediately .
The firing lasted for around 30 minutes and there was intense firing from both the sides .
According to a police statement , the police later conducted a massive cordon and search operation in the area and recovered one AK 81 rifle with magazine and ammunition, two smooth bore rifles, three pistols and other incriminating documents from the area.
In a statement , G.K. Iangrai, assistant inspector general of Meghalaya Police on Thursday said the miscreants who managed to give police a slip are suspected to be aides of Drishti Rajkhowa.it is also suspected that Drishti Rajkhowa was also present during the exchange of fire.
Drishti Rajkhowa was the commander of the 109 battalion of ULFA until 2011, and in November 2011, he was promoted as the deputy CNC of ULFA (I).
