Silchar (Assam), May 2 : At least 20 people died on Tuesday in a landslide in south Assam’s Hailakandi district.
Out of 20, seven deaths were reported in Lakhipur area of Cachar district, seven in Hailakandi district and six in Karimganj district.
The landslide accidents happened in three different areas of Barak Valley region of the district due to incessant rainfall over the past few days. Several others have been injured.
The region has been experiencing heavy rains for the last couple of days.
The northeastern state is already struggling with massive floods which have affected around 3.72 lakh people. The Goalpara district is the worst hit, followed by Nagaon and Hojai.
Six people have died in the floods and 348 villages are under water. Crops over nearly 27,000 hectares have been damaged, Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has said.
Rescue teams have been rushed to the spot.
