Tura (Meghalaya), March 10: Violence erupted in Chibinang, West Garo Hills, as two individuals were killed in police firing during a clash between groups protesting the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) election nomination process. A local market was also set ablaze, with several shops vandalized.
DGP Ms. I Nongrang confirmed the fatalities, stating that the situation is being closely monitored. “We are taking all necessary measures to restore peace and ensure the nomination process continues smoothly,” she said.
The incident prompted authorities to impose a 24-hour curfew and suspend mobile internet services for 48 hours to prevent further escalation. District Magistrate Vibhor Aggarwal cited concerns over public peace and tranquility, while Commissioner and Secretary Cyril Diengdoh appealed for calm, instructing peace committee meetings with community leaders.
The GHADC elections are scheduled for April 10, with nominations being filed from March 9 to 16.
