Shillong (Meghalaya), Jan 25: Hally War, a 69-year-old farmer from Siej village in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills, has been conferred the Padma Shri Award 2026 for his extraordinary contribution to preserving the iconic living root bridges of the region.
This remarkable achievement recognizes his decades-long dedication to nurturing and building these natural wonders, which have become a symbol of sustainable living and harmony with nature.
War’s journey began at the tender age of 10, when he started weaving the living root bridges, a traditional practice of the Khasi people. His profound knowledge, deep respect for nature, and unwavering community spirit have made him a true ambassador of Meghalaya’s heritage and traditions.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma praised War’s work, stating, “For decades, he has dedicated his life to nurturing and building living root bridges, becoming a true ambassador of our heritage, traditions, and sustainable living” .
