Shillong (Meghalaya), Nov 25: The Meghalaya government has enforced a two-month night curfew from 8 pm to 6 am within a radius of one kilometer from the zero line of the international border in East Khasi Hills district. The decision was taken to prevent any likelihood of cross-border movement of unwanted elements, members of proscribed militant groups, and smugglers.
The order, issued by District Magistrate R.M. Kurbah under Section 163 BNSS, prohibits movement of people at the international border with the intention to cross into Bangladesh or sneak into Indian territory. It also restricts unauthorized processions, unlawful assembly of five or more persons, and carrying arms or other instruments that can be used as weapons.
Additionally, the curfew bans illegal activities such as smuggling of cattle, contraband goods, betel nut, betel leaves, dry fish, bidis, cigarettes, and tea leaves. The district administration has taken this step amid concerns over the porous nature of the border, which makes it vulnerable to infiltration by anti-national elements.
