Shillong ( Meghalaya), March 27 : In a significant move, Meghalaya has become the 12th state to sign a reform-linked Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Centre under Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0. The pact aims to provide Functional Household Tap Connections to every rural household, ensuring access to safe and adequate drinking water.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma hailed the agreement, citing Meghalaya’s progress from being among the lowest in rural tap water coverage to achieving 83.59% coverage. The MoU emphasizes community participation, structural reforms, and sustainable operation and maintenance.
Union Minister C.R. Patil urged Meghalaya to accelerate implementation, targeting 100% tap water coverage by December 2028. The Centre has approved an additional ₹1.51 lakh crore outlay for the mission.
