Shillong (Meghalaya), Dec 3: The Meghalaya government, in collaboration with the IndiaAI Mission under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, recently hosted the Regional AI Impact Conference at the State Convention Centre here. The conference brought together senior government officials, industry leaders, academic institutions, and startups to discuss the role of artificial intelligence in governance, climate resilience, and building safer communities.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma emphasized that AI would play a defining role in governance, development, and citizen empowerment in the coming years. He highlighted Meghalaya’s progress in leveraging technology for governance, citing the reduction of the Maternal Mortality Rate by nearly 50% through data-driven interventions. The state has also used technology to map rivers, springs, watersheds, forests, and other critical natural resources.
The conference saw the launch of several key initiatives, including the Bhashini Hackathon, which aims to enable citizens to access services via voice and text interfaces in Khasi and Garo languages. Additionally, the Drishti-NE Hackathon was announced, and memorandums of understanding were signed for setting up a Data and AI Lab and collaboration with MATH T-Hub.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw reiterated the government’s commitment to democratizing technology and ensuring equitable access to emerging tools and digital infrastructure. The conference is part of a national series leading up to the India-AI Impact Summit 2026.
Meghalaya’s IT sector is steadily advancing, with companies operating from the Shillong IT Park developing predictive agricultural models and advanced AI tools for Fortune 500 firms. The state’s young population, strong government support, and strategic partnerships position it to spearhead AI-led transformation in the region.
