Shillong (Meghalaya), Dec 5: The Government of Meghalaya and the Elaka Saitsohpen have signed a historic land agreement, bringing an end to a 45-year-old dispute that dates back to 1982. The agreement involves the return of 128 acres of government land to the Elaka Saitsohpen, providing long-term relief and clarity to the people of the area.
The signing ceremony was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, who praised the dedicated efforts of the Dorbar, the Elaka leadership, and the people who persisted for decades to resolve the dispute. The government has given back the entire 128 acres to the Elaka, not as lease land but as complete ownership.
The resolution of the land dispute is expected to unlock developmental opportunities in the area, including a major ₹114-crore project that was previously stalled due to unclear land ownership. For decades, villagers were unable to register land, build homes, or access housing and education loans. The signing of this agreement marks the beginning of a new chapter for Saitsohpen, a chapter of clarity, opportunity, and growth.
The agreement is a testament to the government’s commitment to resolving long-pending issues and promoting development in the state. The people of Saitsohpen have welcomed the decision, which is expected to bring about significant changes in the area.
