Shillong (Meghalaya), Aug 15: Meghalaya marked its 79th Independence Day with grand ceremonies across the state, showcasing the nation’s rich cultural heritage and diversity. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma hoisted the national flag and took the salute at J.N. Stadium, Polo Grounds here, while cabinet ministers and MLAs officiated in various districts.
In Shillong, 35 marching contingents participated, including BSF, CRPF, and school students. The ceremony featured cultural performances, highlighting Meghalaya’s rich traditions. Security was tightened across the state, with police personnel conducting checks in different parts of the capital city to ensure a peaceful celebration.
The celebrations were marked with enthusiasm and patriotism, with events.
Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar hoisted the flag in Tura, and a dog show was presented by the BSF, Dobasipara Unit. Awards were given to MBOSE toppers, ICSE and CBSE toppers, and outstanding individuals. Flemington Nongrum was felicitated for his 28 years of service in the Indian Army.
Similar celebrations were held in Williamnagar, Jowai, Nongstoin, Mawkyrwat, Nongpoh, Mairang, Baghmara, and other parts of the state, with cultural performances, awards, and sports events. The day was a testament to the nation’s unity and diversity, with people coming together to celebrate their freedom and heritage.
