Shillong (Meghalaya), Sep 15: In a solemn ceremony, Meghalaya bid a final farewell to its five-time former Chief Minister, Dr. DD Lapang, who was laid to rest with full state honours on Monday. The state funeral, held at Student’s Field in Jaiaw here, was attended by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, cabinet ministers, political leaders, and officials of the Meghalaya government, as well as family members and thousands of people from across the Khasi and Jaintia Hills.
Dr. Lapang, fondly known as “Maheh,” passed away on Sept 12 at the age of 96, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and service to the people of Meghalaya. His contributions to the state’s development, including strengthening administration, investing in youth, promoting inclusivity and justice, and paving the way for peace through ceasefire agreements, were remembered and celebrated during the ceremony.
A Life of Service and Leadership
Dr. Lapang’s journey was marked by his commitment to public service and his passion for building a better Meghalaya. Born in 1934, he rose from humble beginnings to become a prominent leader, serving as Chief Minister four times and holding key positions in governance. His leadership style, characterized by humility, gentleness, and fairness, earned him respect across party lines.
Tributes and Condolences
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma paid a heartfelt tribute to Dr. Lapang, describing him as a self-made leader who dedicated his life to serving Meghalaya and its people. “His journey was not just his own, but that of Meghalaya itself,” Sangma said, recalling Lapang’s efforts to upgrade Ri Bhoi and Baghmara as districts, establish the Meghalaya State Women Commission, and promote healthcare through initiatives like cancer detection programs.
The Leader of Opposition, Mukul Sangma, also paid rich tribute to Dr. Lapang, remembering his long innings in public service and his extraordinary opportunity to continue serving despite his advanced age. “He was a powerful orator and served with distinction as Minister of State, Cabinet Minister, Chief Minister, and Leader of Opposition,” Mukul Sangma said.

As Dr. Lapang was laid to rest at the Jaiaw Presbyterian Church Cemetery, the people of Meghalaya came together to pay their respects to a leader who left an indelible mark on the state’s history. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations, and his contributions to Meghalaya’s growth and development will always be remembered.
