Shillong (Meghalaya), April 13 : Shillong, the picturesque capital of Meghalaya, came alive today as the Khasi community celebrated Shad Suk Mynsiem, the festival of peaceful hearts. Declared a local holiday in East Khasi Hills district, the day was marked with traditional dances, music, and vibrant cultural ceremonies at Lympung Weiking, Jaiaw.
The festival, deeply rooted in Khasi traditions, is a thanksgiving ritual marking the end of the sowing season and beginning of harvest. Participants, adorned in traditional attire, showcased the community’s rich cultural heritage. Women, embodying purity and virtue, danced gracefully in the center, while men, symbolizing strength and protection, surrounded them with swords and whisks.
Shad Suk Mynsiem reflects the Khasi people’s connection with nature, community harmony, and gratitude to the divine. The festival features traditional musical instruments like the duitara, drums, and flutes, adding to the festive ambiance.
